Movin' up in the world...

Mom continues to improve. The feeding tube has been removed, the neck brace has been removed, she's not on the morphine anymore so the bad dreams have stopped. They are talking about releasing her from the trauma unit sometime today, but we are still looking at another week in the hospital. She's not quite ready for visitors yet but that should be coming shortly. We do need some help though...After the hospital my mom will be released to an impatient long term acute care rehab center. Basically its a rehab that can still care for her medical needs as well as start her rehab when she's ready for it. We don't know anything about rehab centers so we are hoping some of you have had experiences either yourselves or with family that we can learn from. Positive and negative feedback would be appreciated. We have been purposely vague in the blog as to not give an exact location because of crazies in the blogging world but we are looking at going either north or south from where my parents live so if you know anything about centers at either place please share! Thank you again for all you have done. We are so grateful, and continue to be amazed at so many peoples acts of kindness. Thank you!

Hi Reber Family... My mother is in an acute rehab right now in the town just north of where your parents live. Mom has a view of a beautiful white building with a gold symbol atop. This rehab only has so many beds and wonderful therapists. I was looking into the one in our town but my mothers insurance would not let her go there. soooo if you want to check it out it is in the old building on the 5th floor. all private rooms... WAY TO GO DONNA!!!

I have heard really good things about the place mentioned in "B"s post. They take really good care of the patients and work them at their own pace. The only "down" side would be no visitors during the day because of rehab. Glad to know she is doing so much better. Can not wait until we can start visiting her :) Give her extra hugs!!

Amy said no visitors during the day but I am doing your moms run and go up in between morning and afternoon runs, and again in the evening ... the Therapists have been great and ask questions of me as to how my mom does things at home and what help she will have as well as taking me and showing me some tools (shower chair options bed options etc) that we might want to think about at home. I do have to tell you I have never asked permission I just go. so I do not know if they actually do have that rule.

Brooke, my mom was asking if there is a place she can send a card. If so, please email me at meggieshaye@yahoo.com. Your family is in our thoughts!!

I asked my physical therapist husband and he would definitely avoid staying in the town you are currently in. I'm sure there are some good places there, but he has heard too many horror stories about people's care in that town. He doesn't know any specific good places about the town north of where we live, but if thinks of any, we will let you know.

So glad to hear you are making good progress!!

Yes, that particular rehab is good...or the one across the street from the big new hospital is great...,it is owned and run by bishops and stake presidents and orthopedic surgeons themselves, and the staff are #1....at both places, she will be allowed visitors during the day...just prefferably not during rehab..,which she won't be having every hour of the day..otherwise she would be worn to a frazzle...from personal expereince...go north as soon as you can...we did, and were blessed because of the care and the wonderful people!!!! Check them both out, ask lots of questions, then put it in the Lord's hands!!!

Hey Reber family- I work as a nurse at the hospital in St George and am aware of the rehab center mentioned by 'B' but I'm not sure if it's a long term acute care setting. From what I understand she would need to be ready to do roughly 2-3hrs of rehab a day, I've had patients denied cuz they weren't ready for that amt of rehab yet, but it is a nice facility. So I went to the Social Workers and some nurses I work with and quite a few recommended one in Provo (kind of far, I know), one of the SW called it "amazing.., they do wonderful things for their patients...wonderful staff...they can take a virtual tour online". It's called Utah Valley Specialty Hospital. (UVSH.ernesthealth.com or 801-226-8880). I do agree with Jamie W, I woundn't stay in LV, had quite a few patients do poorly there. I'm sure there are nice ones there, I've just yet to find them :( Been keeping Donna in our thoughts & prayers, YW did a fast for her yesterday. Tell her we're thinking of her and waiting for the day when she returns home! Appreciate the blog, it helps us to know how she's doing. We can see she is in good hands!

If you do end up way north, ie Provo. We are here for you...we have plenty of space for sleeping and such. Anything you need! Let us know! We love you all and are relieved at the baby step progress! Hugs and continued prayers to all!
